Platform Protection

TikTok has supported its moderation strategy, during controversy over proposals to cut jobs for hundreds of content moderators in Britain. TikTok is expected to reduce a significant number of roles in its content moderation department in its British office, with trade unions and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A senior executive explained that human moderation would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by filtering out the most distressing content prior to it has to be seen by people. The company announced a notable drop in disturbing and violent content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to reliance on its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to integrate people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to limit contact with dangerous material as swiftly, which is the area in which a extensive automated help is proving valuable work at speed.”
