The Top Record of the Year: The Artist's Masterpiece Takes the Top Place.

At first glance, this album might appear closer to a challenging university challenge rather than a new popular music album by a musician who just had a last single featured a global K-pop star. Broken into four distinct sections and sung in 13 languages, it is a head-spinning orchestral-influenced opus that delves into feminine mystery, spiritual ascent, and corporal change, often via the perspective of different female saints. The dissolution of a romance—a topic treated with raw honesty on another major 2025 album—soars skyward on this record, supported by the constant presence of a full symphony orchestra and work from an award-winning songwriter among a long roll call of contributors. Its sheer ambition alone makes the efforts of contemporary artists appear quite modest.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that Lux manages to avoid overly intellectual posturing feels nearly miraculous, and complete praise belonging to the artist. While this is not the first time project to fuse historical sounds and the present, its ambitions feel much greater here, and the balancing act more precarious. The element that truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its multilayered tunes, dense arrangements, and engrained theatricality, proves to be an essential spirit of joy. Much like the legendary Björk at her peak, there is a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps the listener up in its whirlwind. Even when she is breaking hearts apart, you nevertheless want to stay right there through the journey.

A Prime Example of Exuberance

This exuberant energy shines brightly on the stirring piano-led song inspired by Saint Clare. It luxuriates in a sorrowful melancholy for more than four moments. Then, everything falls away, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously over-the-top orchestral surge crashes in like cartoonish impact. The track immediately segues into the frenetic single featuring galloping strings, a powerful choir, and a surprise role from the artist herself.

"The magic with Lux lies in the listener rarely quite understand—nor want to predict—what it will go to next."

Almost every track concludes in a totally different place from how it began. One moment explores the transient trappings of fame with a delicate orchestration only to collapsing in digital chaos. Elsewhere, a song echoing the artist's previous rhythmic style starts off moody and brooding, featuring prowling vocals, until fluttering flamenco handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to soften the song's rough edges.

The Balance Between Experiment and Accessibility

A key achievement on Lux involves navigating the gap of bold experimentation and mainstream appeal. It is little surprise that the album has become the artist's first work to break into the Top 5 of key markets: at its core a collection of utterly catchy hits. A song performed entirely in the English language swells around a chorus that feels to gather more and more infectious hooks while it spirals skyward. This trick gets repeated by another expansive ballad that expands and constricts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares with pop culture impact of other heartbreak songs, eviscerating an ex- partner described as an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout these tracks, the singing carry a painted-on edge, akin to a storybook character concealing a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A artistry in an era of impending artificial blankness. It eschews self-absorption in favor of glorious transcendence, crafting an over-the-top drama that skillfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep source of buried treasure that requires patience to fully explore but doesn't feels like hard work. Where other major releases of the year felt like feasting on meal, Lux is a sumptuous feast at which the guests at it, some intoxicated on holy wine, flutter from conversations about historical figures, the profound sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and shared gossip about useless partners. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's most endlessly creative practitioner.
