Match Background

Nottingham Forest v Malmö and past encounters. The two clubs have a unique relationship, also facing each other in Forest's last European campaign in the 1995-96 Uefa Cup, but it is the continental championship from 1979 that entwines these two together, with the record-breaking signing the English forward netting the decisive goal of a rather dull championship game to clinch eternal glory for the red half of Nottingham.

"The legendary management duo, grey-sweatered and anonymous amid all the excitement and joy, stood for a moment on a bench quietly watching the revelry," commented the writer. Theirs has been an extraordinary accomplishment that it is hard to see being repeated – from the lower league to continental competition in a short period."

Worth mentioning to pause a little on Malmö, who became the first, and to date the last Scandinavian side to make the championship match under English manager Bob Houghton.

This match is a very different to that pinnacle, closer perhaps to the Uefa Cup first-round tie between Forest and Malmö in 1995-96. Forest are full of confidence after defeating Liverpool convincingly at the famous ground on Saturday, while Malmö haven't kicked a competitive ball since early November following the completion of Allsvenskan. The general expectation is on the Forest tonight.

Plenty of other action on offer in this match tracking. The Scottish side have already been beaten by a European rival this season. Rangers are last place of the competition table at the midpoint of the league phase with precisely zero points. They desperately need a victory if they are to have any chance of achieving a recovery for a playoff spot.

We'll keep you up to date with all nine of the 8pm kick-offs and provide the current standings from the concluded fixtures, including Aston Villa v Young Boys and the Dutch-Scottish clash.
