Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major health publication demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments should be informed of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the heightened regain.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Condition?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication report a intense resurgence of cravings.

"It was like something activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
