Iconic London landmark Designer Puts Forward Vast 14-Mile Tidal Power Station Along Somerset Shoreline

The visionary architect behind London's famous observation wheel has revealed plans for a colossal tidal power project stretching in a fourteen-mile semi-circle off the Somerset shoreline. This innovative scheme seeks to capture the power of the tides to meet soaring energy needs, fueled in part by the growth of artificial intelligence. Interestingly, the proposal also includes a unique bicycle path that would enable cyclists to skim over the waters of the channel.

An £11 Billion Proposal

The architect, who also created the Brighton i360, is part of a team that has drawn up the eleven-billion-pound proposal. The structure would curve from the town of Minehead to Watchet and employ around one hundred and twenty-five underwater turbines to generate power from the region's exceptionally high tidal range.

“Should the choice is to proceed with embracing increasing AI use – which I am surprised is not being questioned further at a time of climate emergency – then it is far better with a clean power source,” stated Barfield. “Data centers could significantly increase energy demand and this is a consistent and dependable source.”

Addressing the AI Energy Crunch

The initiative comes amid growing concern that the exponential growth in use of artificial intelligence in the UK will escalate carbon emissions unless additional renewable energy sources are found. The expansion of AI is expected to add to steep rises in electricity demand across the nation.

The envisioned lagoon would not block the full breadth of the channel. Instead, it would create a semi-circular structure with a maximum output of 2.5GW – comparable to the output expected from the nearby Hinkley Point nuclear power station. This output would be sufficient to supply around two million homes.

More Than Just Power

The ambitious vision goes far beyond power production. It proposes a walkway along the top of the lagoon wall for walkers and cyclists, a water-sports marina, a lido, and an viewing platform. Planners have also tentatively suggested that datacentres could be installed inside the barrage itself, taking advantage of cost-effective cooling from the sea.

Additional elements envision shellfish farming, arrays of solar panels on the water, and a coastal amphitheatre to revitalize the local economy of Minehead, which has faced economic challenges in recent times.

A Reliable Energy Source

Tidal power is considered more predictable than wind or solar, despite periods each day when the tides turn. Backers of the Somerset tidal project believe it would have a lifespan of one hundred and twenty years, potentially producing power more cheaply than nuclear power over its lifetime.

The project was first conceived several years ago with the goal of lowering the UK's carbon emissions. The more recent rise of AI has created further impetus to the plan, as power needs from data infrastructure are forecast to rise dramatically in the coming decades.

Overcoming Hurdles

This newest plan is the most recent in a long line of schemes to harness the tidal energy of the Severn Estuary. Previous concepts for larger barrages have raised concerns about environmental impact. The team behind this plan emphasize that their proposed lagoon would not disrupt navigation routes to the ports of Bristol and Cardiff and is located outside protected nature areas.

“This area and that entire region of the county is an area of deprivation and this project will drive regeneration,” Barfield commented. “It will create high-quality employment, facilities for water-sports, a swimming complex, a tourist center, an observation deck and cultural facilities.”
