Fierce Winds Leave Tens of Thousands In the Dark in New Zealand

Storm damage in New Zealand
Locals encouraged to avoid going out as powerful gusts batter the nation.

Severe gusts attaining velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have left nearly 90,000 homes without power and compelled agencies to cancel over 100 aircraft departures, as reported by regional news sources.

The winds are affecting the whole southern region and southern sections of the northern region, per the national weather agency.

The nation's agencies have released uncommon severe gust advisories - the top caution category - in core zones such as Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been urged to avoid going outside, stay off roads, and make arrangements for additional power and communication outages.

Broad Impact and Crisis Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting residences predominantly in the South Island, although authorities say that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Regional news have reported that in some places structures have suffered roof damage, whereas power lines and trees have been knocked down by the winds.

Within the capital, a person was fatally injured after being impacted by a tree branch at a popular trail walking spot on Tuesday.

Additionally in the city, a woman was blown onto oncoming traffic on a street by a powerful blast, in a moment that was filmed in a widely shared car camera footage.

Aircraft services to and from the metropolis have been halted because of the weather, whereas certain highways and community centers are not operating.

Meanwhile local leaders have announced a state of emergency, to assist recovery activities.

Work Stoppages During Harsh Weather

These intense gusts on Thursday occur while tens of thousands of teachers, doctors and other public workers take part in what has been called a "mega strike", calling for higher wages and enhanced employment terms.

But the extreme weather has pressured them to modify various scheduled activities, with several external protests shifted to interior venues or called off.

Like conditions are also sweeping Australia, causing a high-temperature event to the country's outback.

Officials have declared flame prohibitions for fear of forest fires.
